US, Iran on brink of wider conflict after Jordan attack; US strikes Qeshm

The United States and Iran stand on the precipice of a broader conflict following the deaths of two American soldiers in Jordan, killed by Iranian missiles. Former President Donald Trump described the soldiers' deaths as "very sad" but framed it as a necessary sacrifice to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. He expressed indifference to the end of the Islamabad agreement, dismissing the words of Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, who called the U.S. president's signature on agreements "worthless." Trump urged Republicans in Congress to add Iran to the bill sanctioning Russia, referencing a proposal by the late Senator Lindsey Graham.

Facing domestic pressure over the war, which has already resulted in 16 American casualties, the commander-in-chief is preparing for a larger and longer conflict. The State Department warned U.S. citizens traveling abroad about the potential for "unforeseen escalation" due to Middle East tensions. The Pentagon has urgently dispatched F-16 and F-35 fighter jets, along with refueling aircraft. Recent attacks have targeted Iranian coastal surveillance and air defense installations, as well as the Revolutionary Guard, according to U.S. Central Command. U.S. forces also bombed Qeshm Island, described by experts as a "missile city" with underground facilities housing fast patrol boats and coastal batteries, crucial for controlling Hormuz.
