Tentoglou, Glave, Battocletti shine as European Athletics Championships continue

Greek long jumper Miltiadis Tentoglou, British sprinter Romell Glave, and Italian distance runner Nadia Battocletti were the standout performers on the second day of the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham. They each secured gold medals in their respective finals, captivating the 16,208 spectators at the Alexander Stadium.

Tentoglou, 28, achieved his fourth consecutive European title in the long jump with a leap of 8.44 meters on his fourth attempt. His victory adds to an impressive career that includes two Olympic golds, a World Championship gold from Budapest 2023, and multiple indoor titles. He extended his dominance in a competition that also saw Italian world champion Mattia Furlani sidelined due to injury sustained during qualification.

The men's 100-meter final saw an unexpected turn as Italian favorite Marcell Jacobs, the reigning European and Olympic champion, pulled up injured mid-race and withdrew. The gold medal went to Great Britain's Romell Glave with a time of 10.09 seconds, followed by compatriot Jeremiah Azu (10.16) and Germany's Owen Ansah (10.19).

In the women's 5000 meters, Italy's Nadia Battocletti delivered a strong performance to claim her second European gold in the distance, following her double victory at the Rome 2024 championships. She finished in 15:37.84, ahead of Spain's Marta García (15:39.98) and Italy's Micol Majori (15:40.65). The day also featured the men's hammer throw, won by Hungary's Bence Halasz with a national record of 84.25 meters.
