Texas confirms 2026 tax-free weekend: these purchases under $100 qualify

Texas is set to host its annual Sales Tax Holiday in August 2026, offering residents a weekend free from state sales tax on a variety of items. The event, scheduled from Friday, August 7, to midnight on Sunday, August 9, allows consumers to purchase eligible goods priced under $100 without incurring the state sales tax.

Shoppers can take advantage of the tax exemption on items such as clothing, school supplies, and footwear. The promotion applies to both physical store purchases and online transactions. For online orders, the tax exemption holds as long as the payment is processed within the designated holiday period, even if delivery occurs later. Items placed on layaway during the weekend also qualify.

However, certain restrictions apply. Products priced at $100 or more are not eligible for the exemption. Additionally, shipping and handling fees are considered part of the sale price; if the total cost, including these charges, reaches $100 or more, the item becomes taxable. Purchases made before or after the holiday period do not qualify for any tax refund. The state Comptroller's office confirmed these details, emphasizing the price cap and the specific categories of goods included in the sales tax holiday.
