Texas Tax-Free Weekend for School Supplies and Clothing Set for August 2026

Texas shoppers can look forward to a sales tax holiday in August, offering a three-day window to purchase essential items without paying state sales tax. The event is scheduled to run from Friday, August 7, through Sunday, August 9, 2026.

During this period, residents can buy qualifying clothing, footwear, and school supplies priced under $100 per item tax-free. This initiative aims to provide financial relief to families preparing for the upcoming school year. The Comptroller's office has specified which items are eligible and which are not.

Specifically for school needs, the tax exemption covers student backpacks priced under $100, including those with wheels or messenger bag styles. Each shopper can purchase up to ten such backpacks in a single transaction without needing a special certificate. However, the exemption does not extend to items like framed backpacks, suitcases, briefcases, sports bags, or computer sleeves.

The rules adapt for business purchases. When transactions are made under a business account, typically involving corporate credit cards, checks, or invoicing, the buyer must provide the seller with Texas Form 01-339, the state's sales and use tax exemption certificate. Online purchases are also included in the holiday, with specific guidelines on how shipping and handling charges are treated.
