Thai school shooter learnt how to use guns via social media

A 14-year-old student in Thailand, responsible for a tragic shooting that claimed eight lives before he ended his own, had reportedly taught himself to use a firearm by watching videos on social media. Police are actively investigating the motives behind the devastating incident, which occurred in Nonthaburi province, bordering Bangkok.

Authorities are examining a confluence of potential factors that may have contributed to the violence. These include the teenager's exposure to violent content online, anxiety related to his studies, personal family issues, and conflicts with friends. Senior police official Atthapol Anusit stated that 17 witnesses have been questioned as part of the ongoing investigation into the motive.

The shooting, the deadliest in Thailand in recent years, has sent shockwaves through the nation and prompted its leader to vow the introduction of new gun laws. Initial reports indicate the student used a handgun, owned by his grandfather, to kill his grandparents at home before proceeding to his school, Debsirin Nonthaburi School, where he opened fire on teachers and students.

Forensic evidence, including the firearm, cartridge cases, the teen's mobile phone, and a knife, has been collected. While police found no evidence of the teen practicing at a shooting range, a teacher had previously confiscated a BB gun he ordered online. The investigation also revealed that the teen had accessed violent content on his home computer. Despite the tragic circumstances, the boy's mother described him as a "bright, cheerful person" who "behaved normally," expressing devastation and disbelief that such an event could occur.
