Thai 'tourist mule' arrested in Taiwan just hours before flight

Authorities in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, apprehended a 22-year-old Thai national just 10 hours before he was set to depart the island, thwarting his escape after allegedly participating in a large-scale fraud operation. The man, identified by the surname Wang, was detained by officers from the Wenshan Police Station during a patrol in Fongshan District.

Wang was reportedly found in a park late at night organizing his backpack, exhibiting suspicious behavior that prompted police to question him. During the initial questioning, he appeared flustered and was found to be carrying financial bank cards that did not belong to him. He initially claimed to have found the cards on the street but could not provide a clear explanation for his itinerary or purpose in Taiwan, raising further suspicion.

Subsequent investigation, including the examination of mobile phone messages and bank card records, revealed that Wang was allegedly working as a "short-term tourist mule" for an international fraud syndicate. He is accused of traveling across Taiwan, making multiple withdrawals in Taipei before moving south to Kaohsiung to continue his illicit activities.

Wang was scheduled to fly out of Taiwan at 11:30 AM on the day of his arrest. The police successfully intercepted him before his departure. He has been transferred to the Kaohsiung District Prosecutors Office on charges of fraud and violating the Money Laundering Control Act. Due to flight risk concerns, the Kaohsiung District Court has ordered his detention and prohibited him from contacting others. Police are continuing their investigation to uncover the broader criminal network behind these activities.
