Thailand eyes Bangladesh labor deal to fill worker shortages

Thailand is exploring a new labor recruitment agreement with Bangladesh to fill shortages in its construction, halal, and agricultural industries. Nitruttisuthinun, chairman of Thailand's Senate Standing Committee on Labour, expressed this interest during a meeting with Bangladesh's Minister of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment. Thailand currently has recruitment agreements with three countries but suspended hiring from Cambodia due to border tensions. Bangladesh is being considered as a fifth source country to mitigate the resulting labor shortfall. However, Thai officials voiced concerns regarding Bangladeshi workers overstaying their visas, using Thailand as a transit point to other nations, and the potential for human trafficking. Bangladesh's Minister Ariful Haque Choudhury welcomed the proposal, expressing hope that these concerns can be addressed promptly to facilitate a memorandum of understanding. He emphasized the need for ethical recruitment, with employers covering initial costs, standard employment contracts in local languages, and robust worker welfare protections including fair wages, accommodation, and medical insurance. Bangladesh's State Minister Md Nurul Haque Nur suggested recruiting skilled workers through the state-run Bangladesh Overseas Employment and Services Limited, highlighting Bangladesh's suitability for both blue-collar and white-collar jobs in Thailand due to cultural and climatic factors.
