Thailand orders nationwide safety checks on venues after fatal fire

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has mandated a comprehensive safety review of entertainment venues across the nation following a deadly fire that occurred on July 12. The Prime Minister emphasized that the response should extend beyond addressing the single incident, noting that similar tragedies have occurred previously.

During a Cabinet meeting on July 14, Prime Minister Charnvirakul stated that the recent fire caused significant loss, eroded public confidence, and damaged Thailand's reputation for safety standards. He declared the issue a "national agenda," requiring coordinated efforts from relevant agencies to enhance safety protocols and prevent future occurrences.

The Ministry of Interior will lead the initiative, collaborating with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, local authorities, the Department of Public Works and Town & Country Planning, and the Royal Thai Police. These agencies are tasked with inspecting buildings and entertainment venues nationwide within the next 30 days.

Priority will be given to fire protection systems, emergency exits, and adherence to occupancy limits and legal safety standards. Establishments found to be non-compliant or in violation of the law will face immediate operational suspension or closure until necessary improvements are made and they pass subsequent inspections and certifications.

To rebuild public trust, relevant agencies are also instructed to transparently share inspection findings and progress reports. This measure aims to assure the public that the government is addressing the safety concerns seriously and systematically, with public safety as its paramount priority.
