Thailand to cut visa-free stay to 30 days for 93 countries

Thailand is taking a decisive step to safeguard its reputation and security by adjusting its visa-free entry policy. The Bangkok Post reports that the Kingdom will reduce the visa-free stay from 60 to 30 days for citizens of 93 countries. This strategic move, as explained by Minister of Foreign Affairs Sihasak Phuangketkeow, is primarily aimed at curbing criminal activities, especially those perpetrated by fraudsters who abuse the generous visa-free period.

These criminals often engage in sophisticated schemes, such as opening multiple bank accounts and using them to funnel money from fraudulent call centers. By shortening the allowed stay, Thailand aims to make it significantly harder for such individuals to operate within its borders and exploit its hospitality. As Minister Phuangketkeow stated, "We always welcome tourists, genuine tourists. A genuine tourist stays in Thailand for a short period of time: 30 days is quite enough for a tourist."

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports is confident that this adjustment will not deter legitimate travelers. Data suggests that the average stay for most foreign tourists is already less than a month. Therefore, this policy change is expected to enhance security without adversely affecting the vital tourism industry, which is a cornerstone of Thailand's economy.
