Thailand to Halve Visa-Free Stays for Tourists from Dozens of Countries

Thailand is cutting visa-free stays for tourists from dozens of countries and territories to 30 days, beginning Sept. 15, in a move officials linked to efforts to curb crimes involving foreigners.

The change affects 60 countries and territories, including Singapore, China, the United States and 27 European Union member states. Under the current scheme, visitors from more than 90 countries and territories can enter Thailand without a visa for up to 60 days.

Recent arrests have involved foreigners accused of drug-related offenses, sex trafficking and operating businesses such as hotels and schools without the required permits. Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow said shortening visa-free visits formed part of a broader effort to stop people abusing the system to commit crimes in Thailand.

The status of visa-free access for about 20 other countries remains unclear. A Foreign Ministry official declined to comment on that issue.

Thailand will extend the visa-free period for visitors from Peru, Brazil and South Korea to 90 days, from 60 days previously. Tourists can still apply once for an extension, subject to the discretion of immigration officials. Thailand has recorded 20.9 million foreign arrivals since the start of the year, a 3% decline from the same period in 2025.
