Thaksin Shinawatra prepares to return to Dubai after sentence cleared

Former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra is reportedly preparing to travel to Dubai on his private jet once authorities complete the procedures confirming the end of his sentence and the removal of his electronic monitoring device. Dubai has previously served as Thaksin's residence after he left Thailand in 2008, a period during which the billionaire maintained significant influence over Thai politics.

Thaksin's return to Thailand in 2023 was viewed as a pivotal moment, closing a chapter of over two decades of political upheaval. Initially sentenced to eight years for corruption and abuse of power, his sentence was reduced to one year through a royal pardon. A more recent special pardon has now erased the remaining portion of his sentence.

Since his conditional release, Thaksin has not publicly commented on his future plans. A spokesperson for the Pheu Thai Party stated that Thaksin has the right to leave the country and the party has no information regarding his travel. Political science lecturer Purawich Watanasukh from Thammasat University noted that Dubai is a logical destination for Thaksin, given his business interests and assets there.

However, Purawich suggested that Dubai might not be a permanent base for the former prime minister, emphasizing Thaksin's strong desire to return to Thailand, even accepting imprisonment to achieve it. Sources indicate Thaksin plans to use his time in Dubai for personal matters and to meet friends. While the timing of his return to Thailand remains uncertain, he is expected to travel frequently between Dubai and Thailand now that his movement is no longer restricted.
