The Assiniboine Park Zoo’s ‘cherished’ white bison, Blizzard, has died

Winnipeg's Assiniboine Park Zoo is mourning the loss of Blizzard, a cherished white bison who died during a veterinary procedure. Blizzard had been a resident at the zoo since 2006 and was a prominent figure, inspiring millions of visitors over his nearly two-decade tenure.

Sadly, Blizzard was already in fragile health and passed away during the procedure despite the very best efforts of the attending team.

The zoo announced Blizzard's death on social media, explaining that he passed away during a diagnostic test intended to uncover the reasons behind a recent decline in his health. Despite the "very best efforts of the attending team," the bison, already in fragile condition, succumbed during the procedure.

Blizzard was more than just an attraction; he played a significant role in the zoo's educational mission. He helped teach visitors about conservation efforts and fostered a connection with nature. Importantly, he also served as a symbol, educating people about the cultural and historical significance of bison for Indigenous communities.

Over the past two decades, (Blizzard) became one of the zoo’s most recognizable and cherished animals. He inspired millions of visitors with his remarkable presence.

The zoo is collaborating with Indigenous advisors and the community to find meaningful ways to honor Blizzard's life and legacy. Visitors wishing to express their condolences can use a book or offering bowl that will be placed at the zoo's entrance over the weekend. The zoo extended its gratitude to its staff, past and present, for their dedicated care of Blizzard.
