The Dominican Republic’s Olympic Road Runs Through the World Cup and Rankings

The Caribbean Queens left the Volleyball Palace without an Olympic ticket, but their route to Los Angeles 2028 remains open. After recovering from their setback in the Norceca tournament with a semifinal win over Cuba, the Dominican Republic still could not catch Canada, which secured the region’s place.

Canada’s qualification capped what the article describes as its best season in three decades. Under Italian coach Giovanni Guidetti, the team returned to the Olympic stage for the first time since Atlanta 1996. Thailand then claimed Asia’s direct berth by rallying from a 2-1 deficit to defeat China in five sets in Tianjin. The 2028 Games will mark Thailand’s Olympic debut.

Three continental qualifying tournaments will conclude in September in South America, Africa and Europe, with one place available from each. Brazil, Kenya and Italy enter those contests as favorites. The Dominican Republic’s next opportunity will come at the 2027 World Cup, scheduled for Aug. 20 to Sept. 5 in the United States and Canada. Thirty-two teams will compete, and three Olympic places will go to the highest-ranked teams that have not already qualified.

The Dominican Republic finished 14th at its most recent World Cup in 2025. Its best result was fifth place in 2014. If the team fails to qualify in North America, it will have one final route through the 2028 Nations League. The top three teams in the ranking without Olympic berths will qualify after the competition ends in May.

Ranking points will make every match important. Thailand’s victory over China moved it up three places and pushed the Dominican Republic from 14th to 15th. The loss to Cuba cost the Dominican team 17.79 points, while its earlier win over the same opponent brought only 4.17. Coach Marcos Kwiek will have to monitor the ranking closely over the next 21 months, especially because it counts points only from official FIVB tournaments and excludes events such as the 2027 Pan American Games in Lima.
