The Epidemic of the Century – Loneliness. Live broadcast from the "Lampa" conversation festival

The "Lampa" conversation festival will host a discussion titled "Loneliness: The Epidemic of the Century" on July 11th at 12:30 PM. This event will bring together experts, researchers, and public figures to delve into the pervasive issue of loneliness as one of the most critical challenges of the 21st century. The discussion will be livestreamed on the "Delfi" portal.

Loneliness in the 21st century has transcended a mere feeling or personality trait, evolving into a serious risk for both mental and physical well-being. International studies indicate that the health risks associated with loneliness are comparable to smoking 15 cigarettes daily. Despite unprecedented connectivity, a growing number of individuals experience feelings of alienation, being unheard, and emotional isolation. This phenomenon reflects a modern society grappling with weakened community ties, family structures, and social bonds, alongside increased personal responsibility for identity, relationships, and life's meaning.

The "Lampa" discussion aims to answer why, despite constant digital accessibility, more people feel isolated. It will explore the boundary between healthy solitude and destructive loneliness, and its impact on mental and physical health, relationships, trust, and the sense of belonging. Participants include neurologist Ainārs Štepen, psychiatrist Māris Taube, theologian Indulis Paičs, actor Kārlis Arnolds Avots, radio personality Linda Samsonova, and representatives from support organizations Anda Švinka and Iluta Lāce. The discussion will be moderated by journalists Dita Deruma and Ērika Staškeviča from "TVNET."

A secondary segment will focus on the connection between loneliness and violence, highlighting how isolation can be an initial step in abusive relationships. The importance of support services, such as "Skalbes" psychological support groups for survivors of sexual violence and the "MARTA" center's project for pregnant women and new mothers affected by violence, will be emphasized. Singer STIRNA (Lilita Vīdnere) will also be a special guest. The "Lampa" festival, now in its twelfth year, is taking place in Cēsis on July 10th and 11th, featuring approximately 400 events across 66 venues.
