‘The Moon Is Ours’: Donald Trump Floods Truth Social With Images and Posts

Donald Trump’s image of the Moon carrying an American flag and the words “The Moon Is Ours” quickly drew attention from international media. The US president offered no explanation for the slogan and added no comment to the graphic.

The image showed the lunar surface with Earth in the background and appeared on Trump’s Truth Social account. Media outlets noted its possible political meaning, while stressing that it did not amount to a formal US claim over the Moon. International law does not allow states to take possession of the Moon or other celestial bodies by declaring sovereignty over them.

The lunar post formed part of a much broader series of unusual computer-generated images published by Trump on Sunday. One proposed renaming New Mexico “New America,” which he said would be more prestigious and better suited to the state’s residents. Democratic New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham responded that the state’s name was not open to debate.

Other graphics focused on Iran. One showed the oil-export hub Kharg Island in flames with the words “Bye bye, Kharg.” Another depicted Trump smashing a map of Iran with a giant hammer. Trump also claimed that the Strait of Hormuz was open, although the article says that was not true.

The president posted images linked to the US Space Force, including a dark ceremonial uniform that social media users compared with Star Wars films. Further images showed Trump at a futuristic command station, surrounded by giant robots, meeting George Washington and appearing beside a picture of the Titanic labeled “Democratic Party.” Another post concerned the economy, with Trump saying he worked for the country rather than himself and had earned hundreds of billions of dollars for the United States.
