The most beautiful village under Porezen and its hidden gem

Raven pri Cerknem, a village of about 190 residents nestled below Porezen mountain, is lauded by locals as the most beautiful in the region. The village offers picturesque scenery, especially in spring, making it an inviting destination for cycling and hiking.

The village with about 190 inhabitants is truly beautiful in spring, when everything is blooming and green, and it invites you on a cycling or hiking trip.

Central to its allure is the Ravenska Jama cave, a natural wonder characterized by its white aragonite crystals. However, the cave has been closed to the public since 2000 due to the negative impact of mass tourism on both the delicate cave environment and the small village. At its peak, the cave attracted up to 3,500 visitors annually, with buses of tourists frequenting the area.

If a person doesn't know that the entrance is exactly there, they wouldn't notice it.

The entrance to Ravenska Jama is discreetly located near the Pri Kramarju homestead. Despite its closure, the cave system has reportedly recovered significantly over the past quarter-century. Experienced caver Tine Jereb, president of the Srečko Logar Idrija caving club, guided a small group, including first-time visitors, to the entrance.

The Ravenska Jama is closed since 2000. At that time, quite a lot of people entered it, buses of tourists drove into the village, which neither the sensitive environment in the cave nor the small town tolerated well.
