The Mystery Behind the “Vilnius Is Expecting” Advertisement Revealed

The mystery behind Vilnius’s “Vilnius Is Expecting” campaign turned out to be a new district, not a baby announcement. During the campaign, residents saw a decoration resembling a pregnancy test in Paupys and a baby bottle in Kudirkos Square, prompting speculation about the message.

The website vilniuslaukiasi.lt now identifies the project as Launagiai, a new microdistrict to be developed by Darnu Group in southern Vilnius. The site lies between Eišiškių Highway and P. Joniko Street, across a 76-hectare area currently dominated by industry and surrounded by forested scenery.

Plans call for 5,500 homes for between 13,000 and 15,000 residents, along with 7,000 jobs. The district is also expected to include a state school, kindergartens, shops, cafés, beauty salons, a cinema, a sports complex, a veterinary clinic, a spa and other facilities. The name Launagiai comes from an old Lithuanian word meaning a south wind.

The announcement itself is not new. Darnu Group disclosed the project in 2024 and said it would be completed by 2036. Chief Executive Sigita Survilaitė described it at the time as Lithuania’s largest private-sector real-estate project in 30 years, saying its scale, layout and functions could allow it to qualify as a city. The company also said it would pay Vilnius about 19 million to 20 million euros in infrastructure fees as the development proceeds.
