The Nepali scientist using mathematics to understand how diseases spread

Dr. Naveen Vaidya, a professor at San Diego State University, is at the forefront of using mathematical models to understand how diseases spread, a field he has applied to viruses like HIV, hepatitis, and COVID-19, as well as diseases such as malaria, rabies, and dengue.

His journey began in Sindhuli, Nepal, where a childhood marked by hardship and the early death of his father fueled his determination. Vaidya's mother worked tirelessly in the fields and took on small jobs to ensure her children received an education. He recalls studying under the dim light of a kerosene lamp and walking for an hour daily to reach school, experiences that, rather than deterring him, strengthened his resolve.

After completing his early education, Vaidya moved to Kathmandu, a "different world" for someone from his village. He juggled part-time work with his studies, eventually earning degrees in science and mathematics. His academic pursuits led him to the United States, where he now researches infectious diseases using advanced computational methods.

Beyond his research in the U.S., Vaidya is deeply committed to his home country. He has actively worked for years to bridge the gap between Nepali students and researchers and international scientific communities. This includes establishing research partnerships between Nepali institutions and SDSU, organizing international programs in Nepal, and supporting students pursuing doctoral and research careers. His efforts aim to bring global scientific opportunities to Nepal, inspired by his own transformative educational journey.
