The Unknown Engineer Who Took Over a $4.7 Trillion Company

When John Ternus made his first public appearance as Apple’s chief executive on Tuesday, he posted one word on X: “Hello.” The brevity seemed fitting for a man who spent 25 years at Apple and reached the top of one of the world’s most valuable companies while largely staying out of the spotlight.

The 51-year-old engineer succeeds Tim Cook, who led Apple for 15 years and remains the company’s executive chairman. Apple is now valued at about $4.7 trillion, while its supply chain ranks among the world’s most exposed to trade and geopolitical tensions.

Ternus received a concrete sign of the company’s expectations on his first day. His total compensation package for 2027 is worth about $58 million, made up of a $3 million annual salary and $55 million in stock awards. He also received shares worth $2.5 million for part of 2026. Most of his new compensation depends on Apple’s performance. Three-quarters of the stock award is tied to Apple’s performance against the shareholder returns of other S&P 500 companies, while the rest will vest over four years.

Cook will receive a new annual salary of $2 million and a stock award with a target value of $45 million for the 2027 financial year. Ternus joined Apple in 2001 after studying mechanical engineering at the University of Pennsylvania. He helped move Apple computers from plastic to metal casings, worked on AirPods and other major products, and became head of hardware engineering in 2021, overseeing the transition to Apple’s own processors in Macs.

That makes Ternus Apple’s first chief executive to come directly from product engineering. Colleagues describe him as highly capable, calm and modest. Corning chief executive Wendell Weeks said Ternus’s talent was clear during their early projects, while his private hobby, car racing, reflected passion, focus and a commitment to excellence. Ternus will need that composure as device-sales growth slows, investors seek more successful products and Apple faces questions about whether its less aggressive investment in its own artificial-intelligence infrastructure can keep it at the forefront of the AI revolution.
