The Volkswagen T-Roc has taken the Golf’s place. Has it earned it?

Volkswagen’s T-Roc now fills the role the Golf once held: the first-choice family car for many European buyers. The Golf remains a major seller, but in 2025 both the T-Roc and Tiguan moved ahead of it. Only the Dacia Sandero and Renault Clio sold more, while the Golf still ranked fifth in Europe.

The latest T-Roc is presented as a return to Volkswagen’s older strengths: a solid feel, restrained character, quality materials and intuitive controls. That marks a break with the period many regard as the most costly and painful in the company’s history, from the 2015 Dieselgate scandal to Herbert Diess’s departure as chief executive in 2022.

Volkswagen’s current situation remains difficult, but the reviewer says that trouble is not apparent from behind the wheel. Compared with the previous generation, the new model represents a clear improvement in quality. Its interior is well finished, and the vehicle feels larger and more mature. The tested four-cylinder 1.5-liter engine produces 150 horsepower and benefits from a mild-hybrid system.

The T-Roc has also moved closer to the dimensions expected in Europe’s important C-SUV segment. It is 14 centimeters longer than its predecessor, while its relatively low roofline gives the body a more dynamic appearance. The model uses the modernized MQB Evo platform, also used by the latest Volkswagen Passat, Tiguan and Tayron, as well as the Audi Q3 and Škoda Superb.

Inside, the T-Roc provides space close to that of the Golf hatchback, with more headroom and a stronger sense of openness. Rear-seat comfort is less generous for exceptionally tall passengers. Overall, the reviewer finds it difficult to identify major weaknesses, although the article says some shortcomings emerge later in the full test.
