Theater Play About Whale 'Timmy' Sparks Controversy, Death Threat Issued

An ensemble staging a play about a humpback whale named "Timmy" in Hamburg has been targeted with hate comments and a death threat, prompting a police investigation. The controversy erupted following the play's use of Christian symbols, which some viewers found offensive.

Directed by Alexander Klessinger, the play "Timmy – Die Hope stirbt zuletzt" (Timmy – Hope Dies Last) draws inspiration from the rescue efforts and media attention surrounding a whale stranded in the Baltic Sea earlier this year. The production incorporates elements from the Christian Passion story and Catholic Mass, notably depicting the whale on a cross and presenting it as a form of savior.

He stressed that while artistic expression should be bold, it should not devolve into the defamation of individuals or mockery of their faith.

Despite the threats, the production will not be altered. The ensemble plans to hold a panel discussion about the criticism from religious groups and the boundaries of religious satire during upcoming performances. The play is scheduled for further showings in September and October, with additional security measures to be implemented for these performances.
