These are the most expensive destinations for 2026: Some require up to $27,000

Despite escalating living costs, travelers in 2026 are undeterred in pursuing their dream vacations, with a new study identifying the world's most expensive destinations. Polar expeditions, exclusive islands, and African safaris are leading the charge, with some trips demanding a substantial financial commitment.

The trend of increased spending on memorable experiences is clear, with 45 percent of travelers intending to boost their travel budgets in 2026. Nearly a quarter are willing to pay a premium for unique, "bucket-list" experiences, often sacrificing other expenditures like clothing, investments, or dining out.

This heightened demand for luxury travel has driven up prices in certain locations. An analysis by travel insurance company Squaremouth reveals the priciest destinations, based on an index comparing average daily travel costs, airfare, accommodation, car rental, and food and drink expenses.

Greenland tops the list with an average daily cost of $1,171, largely due to high prices across most categories. It is closely followed by the British Virgin Islands, French Polynesia, Antarctica, and the Maldives. The analysis highlights a dominance of three types of travel among the most expensive: polar and expedition journeys, exotic island and beach holidays, and safaris and wildlife viewing.

Geographic isolation and remoteness significantly impact these costs, making them harder to access and supply, catering primarily to clients seeking premium, unique experiences. Interestingly, the highest overall trip cost does not always equate to the highest daily expense. While an Antarctic trip is the most expensive overall at an average of $27,195 for an eighteen-day adventure, Rwanda holds the record for the highest average daily cost at $1,609, indicating that shorter, intensive trips can also be exceptionally costly.
