Thousands cross into Ceuta; opposition slams government

Thousands of migrants have crossed the border into Spain's North African enclave of Ceuta, prompting strong criticism from opposition parties who hold the central government responsible. The conservative People's Party (PP) accused the government of neglecting its duties in controlling Spain's and Europe's borders. Meanwhile, the far-right Vox party declared the situation an "invasion."

Santiago Abascal, the leader of Vox, took to social media to describe the events not as people fleeing war, but as an invasion. He alleged that the government, led by Pedro Sánchez, "invited" military-aged men to assault Spain's borders, only to roam Spanish streets shouting "Viva Pedro Sánchez." Abascal placed direct responsibility on Sánchez for any ensuing violence or crime, calling him a "mafia boss" who is desperately seeking more "hired killers" to maintain power.

This is not the first time Ceuta has experienced a mass border breach. In 2021, over 10,000 people crossed from Morocco into Spain via the Tarajal breakwater within a few days. Reports from that time indicated that Moroccan authorities relaxed border controls at two coastal sections, refraining from stopping the large numbers of people heading towards Spain for several days.

The current influx has reignited political tensions, with opposition parties leveraging the situation to criticize the government's immigration and border security policies. The events in Ceuta underscore the ongoing challenges Spain faces with irregular migration from North Africa.
