Thousands protest in Ceuta over migrant crisis, demand answers from Spain and Europe

Thousands of residents filled the Constitution Square in Ceuta on Sunday, protesting the severe situation following a massive influx of migrants on July 30. Organized by Christian, Muslim, Jewish, and Hindu communities alongside the Federation of Neighborhood Associations, the demonstration saw over 5,000 participants, according to National Police.

The protest, which proceeded without incident, aimed to show unity among Ceuta's diverse communities, emphasizing a shared land and destiny. "It is not a time for political colors or religious differences, but for Ceuta and its people," organizers stated.

Attendees included the President of the Autonomous City, Juan Vivas, along with members of the Assembly and representatives from various political groups. However, the focus remained on citizen response. Chants of "Enough," "Sánchez, resign," "Spanish Ceuta," and "Expel illegals" echoed through the square, accompanied by Spanish and Ceuta flags.

A central moment was the reading of the "Manifesto for the Unity of Ceuta" by Ramesh Chandiramani, representing the Hindu community. The manifesto declared "Ceuta is Spain" and described the city as plural, built by people of different faiths and cultures living together. It labeled the current situation "extraordinarily critical" and a "violation of territorial integrity," demanding an "immediate, decisive, and proportionate" response from Spanish and European institutions to address migration pressure, humanitarian needs, and security challenges.
