Thousands Sing Bonnie Tyler's 'Total Eclipse of the Heart' at Farewell Tribute

Thousands of fans gathered in Mumbles, Wales, on Saturday to pay their final respects to the iconic singer Bonnie Tyler, who passed away on July 8 at the age of 75 in Portugal. The public tribute took place in her home country before her funeral, scheduled for Monday at Swansea Cathedral.

As Tyler's coffin, draped with the Welsh flag, was brought through the village streets, the crowd erupted in applause and sang her most famous hit, "Total Eclipse of the Heart." Fans also threw flowers towards the hearse, creating an emotional farewell.

She was a daughter of Swansea, and she never forgot it.

For many locals, the tribute held deep significance. Bonnie Tyler, whose real name was Gaynor Hopkins, was born in Skewen, near Swansea, in 1951. She was discovered in a local nightclub in 1975 and maintained her distinct Welsh accent throughout her career. Admirers traveled from further afield, including Michael Bone from Derby, who felt it was important to attend and pay homage to the artist whose music was "omnipresent" during his teenage years.

Tyler died in Portugal, where she owned a home. She had been hospitalized in early May for intestinal surgery and placed in an artificial coma. Shortly before her hospitalization, she released a single, "Only Love," and was preparing for an extensive European tour. Her family described her in her obituary as a "warm and generous artist" whose music "touched several generations" and continues to fill dance floors and karaoke bars worldwide.
