Three arrested after video shows woman slapping child in Hong Kong mall

An altercation at a Kwun Tong shopping mall resulted in the arrest of three women after a viral video captured one of them slapping a five-year-old girl. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday afternoon, led to the women, aged 34, 34, and 68, being detained by police on suspicion of fighting in a public place.

The confrontation began in the APM mall's play area when the 68-year-old woman, identified as the grandmother of a young boy, and the five-year-old girl had a dispute over the play installations. A video circulating on social media shows the elderly woman slapping the girl, who then falls to the ground.

Following the slap, another woman intervened, striking the elderly woman, and the boy's mother also became involved in the scuffle. A bystander was heard confronting the grandmother, saying, "Hitting a kid? I saw you." All three women were subsequently arrested by the Kwun Tong District Crime Division.

The five-year-old girl and the two younger women were taken to United Christian Hospital for treatment of minor facial injuries. The girl's cheek was reportedly red and swollen after being slapped. The girl and her mother are understood to be from mainland China, holding permits that allow them to travel between mainland China and Hong Kong.
