Three arrested in France for endangering lives amid massive wildfire

Authorities in France's Gironde region have arrested three men on charges of endangering lives as a colossal wildfire continues to rage, having already consumed 32,000 hectares. The arrests highlight ongoing concerns about human activity contributing to the devastating blazes.

Two young men, aged 19 and 21, were apprehended in La-Teste-de-Buch. They face charges for firing fireworks in the vicinity of a highway and a sports complex. The prosecutor's office in Bordeaux stated they will face immediate trial. Separately, a 33-year-old man was arrested in Lormont, on the outskirts of Bordeaux, for deliberately igniting a brush fire. This individual, identified as a professional ambulance driver, was reportedly intoxicated at the time of his arrest and is scheduled to appear before the prosecutor on Sunday.

Adding to the list of arrests, a 26-year-old man was caught smoking in Lacanau. He is also facing charges for endangering lives, stemming from an incident the previous day where he lit a barbecue near his campsite in a forest area. He is slated for trial in January.

These arrests come in the wake of a tragic incident where two professional firefighters died battling a blaze in Mérignac, near Bordeaux. Following this, the prosecutor announced stricter legal action against fire-related offenses in forest areas, which are prohibited in three departments. Penalties for such actions, including discarding cigarette butts, can now include up to one year in prison and a 15,000 euro fine. The prosecutor described such behavior as "still too frequent."
