Three Arrested Over Fire at Abandoned Athens Badminton Building

Authorities have arrested three individuals suspected of involvement in a fire that broke out at the abandoned Badminton building in Goudi, Athens. The Fire Department's Arson Crimes Directorate utilized witness testimonies and video footage to identify and apprehend the suspects, who are believed to have entered the derelict Olympic facility for looting.

Initial suspicions from investigators focused on individuals who had gained access to the dilapidated structure. Evidence gathered at the scene after the fire was extinguished on July 12 indicated that the fire originated from within the building. Fire investigators discovered three entry points into the facility: one at the rear and two on the side through broken glass panels.

According to reports, eyewitnesses informed investigators that they heard voices from inside the building shortly before the fire erupted. They then observed three individuals exiting the premises and leaving in their vehicles. Subsequent collection of visual material from security cameras in the surrounding area led to the identification of three vehicles and their owners.

The three suspects, identified as Roma individuals aged 29, 32, and 52, were apprehended near the Ilisia grove. The Badminton building, originally a temporary structure, was converted into a permanent venue for theater and events following a post-Olympic law. However, its status has been contested, with a presidential decree for Hymettus' protection mandating its demolition upon lease expiration. In 2012, the Council of State ruled the permanent conversion unconstitutional, noting that while the venue was deemed likely to generate revenue, the environmental impacts had not been adequately assessed.
