Three Companies Sealed for Alleged Pollution of Cisadane River in Indonesia

Authorities in Banten, Indonesia, have taken action against three industrial companies suspected of severely polluting the Cisadane River. The Environment and Cleanliness Agency (DLHK) of Banten Province sealed the facilities after an investigation revealed the river's water had turned a thick black and emitted a pungent odor.

There are three companies or industries that we have sealed because they do not have permits. Therefore, perhaps in the future, for companies that do not have permits, we will follow up and take action according to the existing regulations.

Wawan Gunawan, head of the DLHK Banten, stated that the sealed companies were operating without permits. He indicated that further action would be taken against other unlicensed businesses in the future. The investigation traced the cause of the water quality degradation to industrial waste discharged into the river.

The three companies are located in Kampung Melayu Barat Village, Teluknaga District. Two of them, a plastic recycling operation and a jeans washing facility, have been confirmed as contributors to the pollution. Both lacked the required standard wastewater treatment plants (IPAL). A third company, involved in aluminum smelting, is still under deeper investigation to confirm its role in the contamination.

Previously, the Cisadane River had experienced a week-long period of black water and unpleasant smells. The situation has since reportedly returned to normal. The incident highlights ongoing challenges with industrial waste management and environmental regulation enforcement in the region.
