Three conditions under which stepping over congregants during Friday sermon is permissible

Islamic tradition, as conveyed through hadith, strongly discourages congregants from stepping over others during the Friday sermon. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) reportedly instructed a man who did so, saying, "Sit down, you have caused hurt." This prohibition stems from a desire to maintain respect and avoid disturbing those who are already seated and listening to the sermon.

Scholarly interpretations elaborate on this prohibition. Al-Hafidz Ibnu Hajar explains that stepping over involves lifting one's feet over the heads or shoulders of seated individuals, potentially causing discomfort or entanglement with clothing. The act is considered makruh, or disliked, as it disrupts the solemnity of the occasion and disrespects fellow worshippers.

However, Islamic jurisprudence allows for certain exceptions to this rule. If there is an empty space in the front rows, a person may move to fill it, with the Imam Az Zain bin Al Munir suggesting that the fault lies with those who arrived earlier and did not occupy the available space. Additionally, the imam delivering the sermon is permitted to step over congregants to reach the pulpit, as this is a necessary action for fulfilling his role.

Furthermore, specific circumstances can justify moving past others. A notable instance involves the Prophet Muhammad himself, who once quickly moved past congregants after a prayer because he remembered a charitable act that needed immediate distribution. This demonstrates that while the general rule is to avoid stepping over people, urgent or necessary reasons can permit such actions, provided they are handled with consideration.
