Three dead, two injured in paint factory explosion and fire in Cheonan

A fire erupted at a paint raw material factory in Cheonan, South Korea, on August 28, resulting in three fatalities and two injuries. The incident began with an explosion around 11:44 AM in Seongnam-myeon, Dongnam-gu.

Emergency services were quickly mobilized. The fire department declared a Level 1 response within 20 minutes, deploying 211 personnel and 40 vehicles to combat the blaze and conduct search operations. The Cheonan city government issued a disaster alert at 12:12 PM, advising nearby residents to exercise caution and urging drivers to use alternative routes.

Tragically, three individuals were confirmed dead. The first victim, a 70-year-old employee working in the cafeteria, was found deceased. Authorities later recovered the bodies of two other individuals, believed to be foreign workers, on the 6th and 8th floors of the factory building. The identities of these two victims are still under investigation.

In addition to the fatalities, a man in his 30s sustained severe injuries. One firefighter was also injured during the response efforts. Firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control by approximately 2:00 PM. A joint investigation involving relevant agencies will determine the exact cause of the fire and the extent of the damage once the fire is completely extinguished. Cheonan City is working with the police to confirm the victims' identities and has established a support center to provide one-on-one administrative assistance to the affected families.
