Three Indonesian Airports Resume Operations After Anak Krakatau Ash Disruption

Three Indonesian airports that closed after volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau spread across the region have resumed operations.

Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Tangerang, Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in Jakarta and Husein Sastranegara Airport in Bandung began handling flights gradually on September 8, 2026. InJourney Airports said the reopening followed a Notice to Air Missions from AirNav Indonesia and came after the airports met aviation safety requirements.

Soekarno-Hatta resumed operations at 12:30 a.m. local time, followed by Halim Perdanakusuma at 12:40 a.m. and Husein Sastranegara at 12:42 a.m. Before reopening, airport operators removed volcanic ash from airside areas, including aprons, taxiways and runways. They also tested runway friction and found that the facilities met the standards required for flight operations.

During the initial recovery phase, flight control is being conducted gradually and in a measured manner through the implementation of ATFM. This arrangement is needed so that departures and arrivals can resume safely and orderly, while also allowing airport operating capacity to be restored gradually.

Soekarno-Hatta General Manager Heru Karyadi said authorities were using Air Traffic Flow Management to control arrivals and departures during the initial phase. The airport is coordinating with public transport operators to ensure sufficient vehicles for passengers traveling to and from the airport.
