Three Kano traffic officials hospitalised after mob attack

An incident in Kano has led to the hospitalization of three Kano State Road Traffic Agency (KAROTA) officials following an assault by a mob of angry youths. The confrontation arose in the aftermath of a road accident that occurred on Wednesday in Kwanar Dawaki town, along Zaria Road.

The Sharon commercial bus was stopped by the team for a routine check when, suddenly, the truck driver, who was speeding, rammed into the passenger bus, which somersaulted several times, as a result of which many passengers sustained serious injuries.

According to a statement from KAROTA's Public Relations Officer, Abubakar Sharada, the accident involved a Sharon commercial bus. A KAROTA patrol team had stopped the bus for a routine check when a speeding trailer collided with it. The impact caused the bus to overturn multiple times, resulting in serious injuries to several passengers.

In the chaos that ensued, a group of youths reportedly attacked the KAROTA personnel, inflicting injuries on them. The driver of the trailer involved in the initial collision managed to flee the scene amid the confusion. The KAROTA management, through its Managing Director Faisal Kabir, appealed to the public to show respect and offer assistance to uniformed personnel performing their duties.

When they saw how some of the passengers were injured, the group (youths) launched an attack on the KAROTA personnel, inflicting serious injuries on them.

Kabir emphasized that KAROTA officers are government representatives tasked with maintaining law and order on the highways and should not be viewed as adversaries. He commended the staff for their dedication. The incident also brings to light previous concerns raised by motorists regarding KAROTA's practice of setting up roadblocks on major roads, with some operatives allegedly extorting drivers.
