UK court jails Nigerian seven years for stabbing partner

A Nigerian national, Osarenkhoe Atutie, has received a seven-and-a-half-year prison sentence in the United Kingdom for the attempted murder of a woman in Edinburgh. Atutie, 32, had previously pleaded guilty to the violent offense at the High Court in Glasgow.

The incident occurred on the morning of November 11, 2025, in the Duke Street area of Leith. Atutie approached the 30-year-old victim, whom he knew, and repeatedly stabbed her with a knife. The attack left her with at least 12 separate injuries, according to reports.

Crucially, members of the public intervened before emergency services arrived. They apprehended Atutie nearby and restrained him until the police took him into custody. The victim was transported to the hospital, where she received treatment and was later discharged.

I’d like to thank those members of the public who came to the victim’s aid during the ordeal. Without their intervention and assistance, there is a high chance that the victim would not have survived the attack.

Detective Sergeant Craig McMillan of Police Scotland described the attack as "particularly harrowing" and commended the bravery of the bystanders. He stated that their intervention likely saved the woman's life, emphasizing that violence against women and girls remains a top priority for Police Scotland. The sentencing follows another recent case where a Nigerian man received a life sentence for murder in Nottingham.
