Three-kilometer radius around Anak Krakatau declared off-limits to residents and tourists

A three-kilometer zone around Anak Krakatau has become off-limits to residents and tourists as the volcano remains at Indonesia's second-highest alert level.

The Geological Agency of the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry said people living near the volcano, as well as visitors, tourists and climbers, must not enter the restricted area. The measure aims to guard against hazards while volcanic activity remains high.

Agency chief Lana Saria warned of hot clouds, lava, incandescent rock fragments, ashfall and heavy volcanic ash. She also urged people affected by ash to wear masks and advised the public not to trust eruption information from unreliable sources.

Anak Krakatau's activity began rising again in July 2026. On July 2, authorities raised its status from Level II, or Alert, to Level III, or Standby. From 11 p.m. on Sept. 4, the volcano produced continuous eruptions accompanied by lava fountains, rumbling and explosions. The highest activity came on Sept. 5.

The Geological Agency continues to monitor the volcano using multiple parameters and has urged residents to follow official government updates.
