Three Provinces and Two Local Governments Win 2026 Regional Engineering Index Awards

North Maluku took the top distinction in Indonesia’s first Regional Engineering Index awards, receiving both the provincial gold award and the platinum prize for the highest overall index score in 2026.

On behalf of the Indonesian Engineers Association, I express my appreciation to the Ministry of Home Affairs, particularly the Agency for Domestic Policy Strategy, for welcoming PII’s initiative to work together on measuring the Regional Engineering Index.

Riau received the provincial silver award and Jakarta the bronze. At the regency and city level, Sragen won silver and Balikpapan received bronze. North Maluku Deputy Governor Sarbin Sehe accepted the awards on behalf of Governor Sherly Tjoanda.

The Indonesian Engineers Association worked with the Home Affairs Ministry’s Agency for Domestic Policy Strategy to conduct the assessment. It involved 327 provincial, regency and city governments. North Maluku emerged from six provincial nominees, while Sragen and Balikpapan were selected from nine city and 18 regency nominees.

The Engineering Index is part of the implementation of Law No. 11 of 2014 on Engineering, namely to assess engineering practices across all regional governments, including provinces, regencies and cities.

PII chairman Ilham Akbar Habibie said the index forms part of the implementation of Indonesia’s 2014 Engineering Law. He described it as an assessment tool for engineering practices across regional governments, rather than simply an awards scheme. The ceremony also formed part of preparations for the 44th Conference of the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisations, scheduled for October 20 to 22, 2026, in Bandung.

The Regional Engineering Index is not merely an award. The results of the measurement indicate that engineering practices are beginning to be placed as an important part of regional development governance.
