Three Rohingya men arrested in Malaysia for using fake UNHCR cards

Malaysian immigration authorities apprehended three Rohingya men attempting to evade a routine check in Kota Bharu. The men were found to be in possession of fraudulent United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) cards, a discovery made during a large-scale operation targeting undocumented foreign workers.

Officials from the Immigration Department of Malaysia (JIM) reported that the three men, aged between 30 and 40, were observed behaving suspiciously near a bus station before attempting to flee. A subsequent check revealed that their UNHCR cards bore false images and names, indicating they were not legitimately issued. The men claimed to have obtained the cards from an individual and had come to Malaysia for employment.

However, their attempt failed and a check using a special application found that the UNHCR card used was fake as the picture and name displayed were not theirs.

This incident occurred during "Op Mega," a coordinated effort involving JIM, the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs, and the Kota Bharu Municipal Council. The operation inspected a total of 362 foreign nationals from various countries, including Nepal, Cambodia, Indonesia, Pakistan, Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Rohingya, for immigration violations. The detained individuals ranged in age from two to 60 years old.
