Three sisters among four killed as mud house collapses in Kanpur amid rain

Four members of a family, including three sisters aged 16, 12 and seven, died when their mud house collapsed during rain in Hirni village in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur district on Sunday morning.

Police identified the dead as 45-year-old Mukesh, a daily-wage labourer, and three of his daughters. His 19-year-old daughter Kajal remains critically injured and is receiving treatment at Halet Hospital in Kanpur.

All five family members were inside the house at about 9:30 a.m. when it collapsed. Villagers said continuous rain over several days had weakened the structure. After hearing the collapse, residents began digging through the debris and informed police and administrative officials. The family was pulled out after nearly two hours and taken to the Patara community health centre.

Mukesh's cousin, Tej Bahadur Singh, alleged that the family repeatedly called the Sāḍh police after the collapse but that their calls initially went unanswered. He said villagers had to begin the rescue themselves because police arrived late. The family also alleged that doctors were unavailable at the community health centre, delaying treatment for the injured.

The relatives demanded an impartial inquiry and action against anyone found responsible. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed condolences, directed officials to ensure proper treatment for Kajal and ordered assistance for the bereaved family. He also wished her a speedy recovery.
