Throwback: Ogogo’s 'I would vomit blood' account resurfaces after death

Veteran Nollywood actor Taiwo Hassan, widely known as Ogogo, has died at the age of 66. His passing on Sunday, August 23, 2026, follows a recent appeal by his daughters for medical assistance as he battled stage-four cancer.

His death has brought renewed attention to a resurfaced interview where Hassan recounted his arduous seven-year struggle with a severe ulcer. In the interview, he described the debilitating pain, stating, "I would vomit blood. For seven months I prayed while sitting."

Hassan detailed how the ulcer had caused significant damage, discovered during a scan at King Solomon Hospital. He also recalled how a self-administered remedy for malaria, involving Alabukun and lime, worsened his ulcer condition, a fact a doctor later confirmed.

I told the doctor, ‘If I had malaria, I’d take Alabukun and lime.’ He shouted, ‘You have implicated yourself. You have an ulcer and the remedy you used for malaria caused this.’

The illness severely impacted his ability to eat, with Hassan explaining, "I even took a teaspoonful of rice; I would vomit everything before it settled. For seven years, I survived only on cornmeal." He eventually combined spiritual and medical treatments to aid his recovery, expressing deep gratitude for his survival.

His daughters, Kaira and Lima Taiwo, had previously disclosed that doctors could no longer administer chemotherapy due to the advanced stage of his cancer, prompting the family to explore alternative treatments. Hassan, who died at 3 pm on Sunday, is expected to be buried in his hometown, Ilaro, Ogun State, on Monday.
