Thunderstorms in the capital region, Meteorological Institute warns of severe weather

The Finnish Meteorological Institute has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the Uusimaa region on Saturday evening, effective until 11 p.m. Meteorologist Eevi Silvennoinen from the institute explained that thunderstorms have arrived in Finland from the Baltics, crossing the Gulf of Finland. The capital city, Helsinki, has also experienced lightning strikes throughout the evening.

"Currently, the atmosphere has favorable conditions for the formation of thunderstorms. The air is moist and unstable, which readily leads to the formation of thunderclouds," Silvennoinen stated. The institute warns that localized rainfall associated with these thunderstorms could be substantial. For instance, a thunderstorm in Nikkilä, Sipoo, brought heavy rain and strong winds after 8 p.m. on Saturday. By 9 p.m., over 2,000 customers in Sipoo were without electricity.

More intense thunderstorms and larger rainfall amounts are anticipated for the capital region on Sunday. The Finnish Meteorological Institute is warning of simultaneous heat, heavy rain, and urban flooding risks in Uusimaa on Sunday. In Uusimaa, Southwest Finland, and Kanta-Häme, rainfall could exceed 30 millimeters per hour. "If a shower occurs in the city center, there is a possibility of urban flooding," Silvennoinen noted.

The weather is expected to become calmer at the beginning of the upcoming week. "The forecasts indicate that conditions are changing, and air that is conducive to thunderstorms is no longer flowing in. More high pressure and quite sunny conditions are expected," Silvennoinen described the outlook for the coming week. The warnings highlight the volatile weather patterns affecting southern Finland.
