Thuringia Reports Slight Decrease in Attacks on Police Officers

Thuringia recorded a slight decrease in attacks against police officers last year, according to the latest police crime statistics released by the state's Interior Ministry. In 2025, law enforcement officials were targeted in 1,274 criminal offenses, a reduction from the 1,424 incidents reported in 2024.

Despite this decrease, the number of attacks in 2025 still exceeds the 1,182 cases documented in 2021, indicating a persistent challenge. Thuringia's Interior Minister Georg Maier (SPD) acknowledged the ongoing issue, stating that police officers increasingly face aggression, disrespect, and violence during their duties. He emphasized that attacking law enforcement officers is an attack on the state and those who ensure public safety, deeming such actions unacceptable.

The statistics also revealed a high clearance rate for these offenses, with 99.2 percent of the cases resolved. Authorities identified 993 suspects in 2025, compared to 1,074 in the previous year. Notably, nearly half of the suspects (49.7 percent) were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the offense, and 24.1 percent were not German citizens.

The data highlights the complex nature of assaults on police, involving factors such as alcohol consumption and the nationality of perpetrators. The ministry's report underscores the need for continued efforts to address violence against police officers while acknowledging the progress made in reducing the overall number of incidents.
