TikTok pulls down 4.8 million violative videos in Nigeria in Q1 2026

Abuja, Nigeria – TikTok has significantly ramped up its content moderation efforts in Nigeria, removing more than 4.8 million videos in the first quarter of 2026 for violating its community guidelines. This action is part of the platform's intensified enforcement against harmful content and strengthened AI safety measures.

The platform's Q1 2026 Community Guidelines Enforcement Report reveals that the removed videos constituted 0.6% of all content uploaded by Nigerian users during the period. Notably, TikTok's automated systems were highly effective, proactively detecting and removing 99.8% of violative videos before they were reported by users. Furthermore, 92.8% of these videos were taken down within 24 hours of upload.

Globally, TikTok removed over 184 million videos in the same quarter, representing 0.5% of all uploads. The company highlighted its ongoing investments in content moderation and safety systems as key to these efforts. In Nigeria, enforcement also extended to TikTok LIVE, where 120,000 LIVE sessions were suspended for guideline violations, an increase of approximately 40,000 from the previous period.

TikTok attributes its enforcement success partly to collaborations with Nigeria's Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and various civil society organizations. The platform is also focusing on artificial intelligence, having removed over 118,000 Nigerian posts under its policy for edited or AI-generated content. Globally, over 86 million fake accounts were removed.

Looking ahead, TikTok plans to launch an in-app AI Literacy Hub for Nigerian users in the coming weeks. This initiative aims to provide educational resources on recognizing AI-generated content and promoting responsible AI use. The company has committed over $4 million to its AI Literacy Fund and is partnering with organizations like the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) and Paradigm Initiative to advance AI education in Nigeria.
