TikTok settling three teen social media lawsuits ahead of trial

TikTok has reached an agreement to settle three lawsuits brought by young individuals who allege that social media companies intentionally designed their platforms to be addictive, thereby harming users' mental health. The announcement was made by a plaintiffs' lawyer on Monday.

The specific terms of these settlements remain confidential and are contingent upon the finalization of written settlement agreements with TikTok. The company has not yet responded to a request for comment. These cases are among thousands of similar lawsuits that have been consolidated in California state court.

While TikTok has settled, the legal battles continue for other major platforms. Claims against Meta Platforms, Google's YouTube, and Snap Inc.'s Snapchat are still active, with a trial scheduled for October. These three cases, involving minors identified only by their initials, were selected as bellwether trials to gauge how juries might perceive similar claims.

The plaintiffs in the settled cases have alleged various harms, including self-harm, anxiety, depression, addiction, and eating disorders, attributed to their use of social media platforms. These settlements follow another bellwether case that was dropped before trial in July and a previous trial in March that resulted in verdicts against Meta and Google in a case concerning social media addiction.
