TikTok streamer investigated in Turkey for allegedly insulting religious values, released under judicial control

Authorities in Elazığ, Turkey, have launched an investigation into a TikTok live stream that allegedly contained expressions insulting religious values. The probe was initiated following social media posts highlighting the content of the broadcast, which took place on July 23, 2026.

The individual identified as the streamer, Esra Gürbüz, was apprehended by security forces on July 24, 2026, and subsequently brought before the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office. Legal action has been taken against Gürbüz under Article 216, Paragraph 3 of the Turkish Penal Code, which addresses the public denigration of religious values embraced by a segment of the population.

According to a statement, the current legal framework did not permit the imposition of a pre-trial detention order for the alleged offense. Consequently, Gürbüz was released under judicial control measures. These measures include a prohibition on leaving the country and a requirement to report to authorities periodically (signature obligation).

The investigation into the matter is ongoing and is being conducted by the Elazığ Chief Public Prosecutor's Office. The case highlights the legal scrutiny of online content in Turkey concerning religious sensitivities.
