Tinubu approves new police academy campus in Ogun, N15bn take-off grant

President Bola Tinubu has given the green light for a significant expansion of the Nigeria Police Academy, approving the establishment of a new campus in Erinja, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State. This landmark decision, backed by a substantial N15 billion take-off grant sourced from TETFund's 2026 allocation, marks a pivotal moment in the modernization and decentralization of police education in Nigeria.

The approval directly implements the provisions of the Nigeria Police Academy (Establishment) Act, 2021, which empowers the institution to operate as a multi-campus university. This strategic move is designed to enhance the Academy's capacity to train and develop the nation's police force, addressing the growing need for a larger and better-equipped police workforce. The funding will cover essential infrastructure, academic facilities, student accommodation, and core training assets, ensuring the new campus is fully equipped from the outset.

The intervention fund will be sourced from TETFund’s 2026 allocation and will finance priority infrastructure, academic facilities, student accommodation, and core training assets at the new campus.

The siting of the new campus in Ogun State was the result of a high-level consultative process involving key figures from the Ministry of Police Affairs, Ministry of Education, the Inspector General of Police, and the National Universities Commission. This collaborative approach considered crucial factors such as student intake capacity, funding realities, academic quality assurance, and the long-term training requirements of the Nigerian Police Force. From a national security perspective, this expansion is viewed as a critical step towards strengthening institutional governance, advancing modern policing education, and ultimately bolstering national security. The new Ogun State campus will be the first satellite campus established under the 2021 Act, signifying a new era for the Nigeria Police Academy.
