Tinubu hails NDLEA for busting Nigeria’s largest secret meth lab

President Bola Tinubu has lauded the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for a significant victory against drug trafficking, celebrating the dismantling of what is described as the largest clandestine methamphetamine laboratory ever discovered in Nigeria. This operation, which took place in a forest in Ogun State, not only led to the apprehension of a Nigerian kingpin and his associates, including three Mexican nationals, but also resulted in the seizure of illicit drugs valued at an astonishing $362.9 million (around N480 billion).

The President, in a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, commended the NDLEA operatives for their professionalism and courage. He underscored that this success reflects his administration's firm stance against organized crime and serves as a stark warning to those involved in the narcotics trade. The operation's success in apprehending foreign supervisors and local kingpins highlights the intricate nature of these criminal networks.

This successful operation, which led to the arrest of foreign nationals, local kingpins and other collaborators, as well as the seizure of chemicals and illicit drugs valued at over $360m, demonstrates exceptional professionalism, courage and unwavering commitment to safeguarding society from the devastating effects of narcotics.

Tinubu also seized this moment to draw attention to a broader regional concern: West Africa's increasing susceptibility to the influence of international drug cartels. He pointed out that the region has become a critical transit hub for illicit substances destined for Europe and North America. This acknowledgment from the highest level of government signals a commitment to tackling not just domestic drug production but also the transnational challenges that plague the region.

The NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (retd.), detailed the tactical raid that led to the arrests, emphasizing the element of surprise against the syndicate. The subsequent operations, including the arrest of the alleged cartel kingpin in Lagos and the recovery of crucial evidence, further solidify the agency's investigative prowess. This comprehensive approach, from the forest lab to the kingpin's residence, demonstrates a determined effort to dismantle these criminal enterprises from top to bottom.
