Tinubu’s Defence Reforms to Enhance National Security, Says House Committee

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration is undertaking a major overhaul of Nigeria's defense sector, a move lauded by the House of Representatives Committee on Defence as historic and crucial for national security. The reforms encompass a substantial upward review of salaries and welfare packages for all armed forces personnel, alongside a significant expansion of the Nigerian Army.

The President’s actions as historic, timely and far-reaching, saying they reflect the Federal Government’s strong commitment to strengthening the country’s security framework while improving the welfare and working conditions of military personnel.

Hon. Babajimi Benson, Chairman of the House Committee on Defence, praised the President's approval of these measures, emphasizing their timeliness and far-reaching impact. He stated that the improved salary structure, particularly for junior personnel, is expected to significantly boost morale, enhance operational effectiveness, and improve the retention of competent individuals within the military. This, he believes, will further solidify the commitment of the armed forces to safeguarding Nigeria's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

A key component of the defense reforms is the expansion of the Nigerian Army from its current eight divisions to twelve. This strategic development involves establishing new divisions in Makurdi, Ilorin, Jalingo, and Benin City. According to Benson, this expansion will strengthen command and control structures, decentralize military operations, and enable more rapid troop deployment. It is also anticipated to enhance border security and bolster the military's capacity to combat terrorism, insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, and other criminal activities across the nation.

The improved salary structure for officers and soldiers at all levels, particularly the substantial increase for junior personnel, would enhance morale, boost operational effectiveness, improve personnel retention, attract competent recruits and further strengthen the commitment of members of the Armed Forces to protecting Nigeria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The committee views these reforms as a strategic investment in the personnel of the armed forces, recognizing their sacrifices for Nigeria's peace and stability. The combination of enhanced welfare, increased manpower, and a strengthened operational framework is expected to foster greater professionalism, discipline, and efficiency within the military.
