Tinubu Seeks Reps' Approval for Police Trust Fund Overhaul Bill

President Bola Tinubu is pushing for a legislative overhaul of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) by transmitting a bill to the House of Representatives for its repeal and re-enactment. This move underscores the administration's commitment to bolstering the Nigeria Police Force through enhanced funding, improved oversight, and greater operational efficiency.

I am pleased to transmit to the House of Representatives for consideration and passage into law, the attached Act proposing repeal and re-enactment of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (Establishment) Act, 2025.

The President's letter to the Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, dated April 1, 2026, urges expedited consideration of the bill. Tinubu highlighted the necessity of updating the existing framework to meet contemporary security demands. The proposed legislation aims to ensure better management and administration of the fund, facilitate training and skill enhancement for police officers, provide modern security equipment, and improve their welfare.

The Nigeria Police TRUST Fund, NPTF Act repeal and re-enactment is imperative to provide management and administration of the fund, support for the training and enhancement of the skills of the Nigeria Police Force, provision of modern security equipment and machinery, and to enhance the welfare of the NPF, among other matters.

This initiative is particularly significant given the historical challenges of chronic underfunding within Nigeria's policing system. The NPTF was established to provide a dedicated funding stream, drawing resources from the Federation Account, corporate contributions, and international aid. The proposed amendments are expected to significantly enhance the NPTF's operational capacity, accountability, and sustainability, aligning it with the nation's current security imperatives. From a Nigerian perspective, strengthening the police force through robust funding mechanisms is crucial for maintaining internal security and public order.
