Tinubu should tackle hunger, insecurity, not opponents – Atiku

Nigeria's former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has sharply criticized President Bola Tinubu, accusing him of prioritizing political rivalries over the nation's escalating crises. Abubakar urged Tinubu to confront his administration's failures, including rampant inflation, food insecurity, and widespread unemployment, rather than engaging in "political grandstanding."

In a statement, Abubakar described Tinubu as "a drowning man" attempting to divert attention from his government's "abysmal record." He expressed dismay that the President's combative remarks came in response to a call for credible elections by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria. Abubakar argued that such an occasion demanded reassurance and statesmanship, not threats against opponents.

"Mr President, you are a drowning man. Wrestle with your failures, not your opponents," Abubakar declared. He emphasized that Tinubu should focus on the millions of Nigerians struggling to afford food, the insecurity plaguing farming communities, and the economic decline fueled by policy inconsistency and dwindling investor confidence.

These are the words of a drowning man. A government that has little to celebrate inevitably seeks refuge in chest-thumping.

Abubakar asserted that Nigerians are more interested in tangible government performance than "political performances" or "empty slogans." He stated that boastful declarations and threats against opponents would not solve the country's pressing issues, such as the depreciating naira or empty stomachs. The former Vice President concluded that Tinubu's greatest challenge is not the opposition but his own administration's record, which affects every unpaid worker, struggling business, unemployed graduate, and hungry family.
