Tokayev to Convene First Session of Kazakhstan’s Kurultai on Aug. 28

Kazakhstan's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has officially convened the first session of the country's newly established unicameral legislature, the Kurultai. The inaugural meeting is scheduled for August 28 at 11 a.m. in Astana, according to a decree signed by the president and announced by the Akorda press service.

The convening of the Kurultai marks a significant step in implementing institutional changes introduced by Kazakhstan's new constitution, which took effect on July 1. The 145-member legislative body was elected on August 23 in the first parliamentary election held under this new constitutional framework.

Final election results confirmed that five political parties successfully passed the 5% threshold to gain representation. The Adilet Party emerged as the largest bloc, securing 110 seats. Other parties represented include the Auyl People’s Democratic Patriotic Party with 10 seats, Respublica with nine, and the Aq Zhol Democratic Party and the Nationwide Social Democratic Party, each with eight seats. Notably, the People’s Party of Kazakhstan and the Baytaq Green Party failed to meet the threshold, while 2.51% of voters opted for the "against all" choice.

The Kurultai replaces the former bicameral Parliament, with its deputies elected through proportional representation from party lists in a single nationwide constituency. The commencement of its first session will formally launch the new legislature's operations.
